TAMPA his city has a special thing going for lovers of gourmet food and fine art. One of the city's top restaurants, Mise en Place, exists next to one of its best art showrooms, Grand Central Gallery. Gallery ownerdirector Jacqueline Franks keeps the space open late Friday and Saturday evenings for those who would feast their eyes before or after dining.

Just as wisely, she has taken a cue from another established institution, the Tampa Museum of Art, which is currently showing work by world renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. Franks has brought in work by Chi-huly and others that expands our understanding of art glass as it offers an opportunity to acquire. Also on display are works by some of the most important names in art glass (Jon Kuhn, Richard Royal, Benjamin Moore) as well as a local artist making a name (Duncan McClel-lan). There are a few pieces of Venetian glass from the Venini School in Italy where Chihuly studied, and, in the back room where all prices are under $800, Robert Mickelsen's borosilicate glass. Royal and Moore are members of Chihu- ly's glass-blowing team.

Royal has been a gaffer (master glass-blower) for Chihuly since 1978 and an artist in his own right. The slender-footed cup shapes of his "Relationship Series" sometimes look like a mother holding a child. Moore, who has taught art glass classes extensively, exhibits from his Interior Fold Platter series' broad-rimmed handsome bowls. Royal's and Moore's works are vessels. Jon Kuhn of Winston-Salem, N.C., produces constructed glass sculpture tiny layers of clear and colored cast glass embedded in pure, clear geometric shapes.

They seem suspended in space, and seem to change as the viewer walks around them. Leon Applebaum of Plattsburgh, N.Y., exhibits blown glass shapes assembled one on another. Some are clear; some are colored and textured. More decorative than visually challenging, they won Art Festival Beth-El's 9. On a permanent basis, The Glass Canvas, specializing in glass by artists of regional, national and international reputation, is at 233 Fourth Ave.

NE, St. Petersburg. Also in St. Petersburg, artist Chuck Boux operates one of the nation's few "glory holes" huge hot furnaces where large art glass pieces can be made. This is where M.c-Clellan, working with Boux, makes his pieces.

We'll cover Chihuly's museum show next week. best of show award last January.
