On June 28, 1996, Melonny McKaughan told prosecutors she had heard her son admit that he and his car had been at the scene of the shooting, that he had been carrying a gun and had seen someone get killed. Detective Ron Sudler promptly arrested Reddick. Since then, McKaughan has backed away from that statement.

She said her son never told her he had killed anyone but did tell her his car had been stolen. And Sudler, under cross-examination by defense attorney Jeff Albinson, said none of the witnesses picked Reddick as the man they saw the day of the shooting. But prosecutors Garry Potts and Tim Hessinger say Reddick killed DeBusk during a robbery. One witness for the prosecution is a man who said he acted as a lookout during the robbery on May 18, 1994, and saw Reddick shoot DeBusk. Timothy Wellman said Reddick considered DeBusk "a softy." About 2 p.m.

three men walked up to DeBusk's apartment. DeBusk answered the door and then tried to run away. Wellman said he saw Reddick wrestling with DeBusk in the yard. "The next thing I seen is Mr. Reddick point the gun at Mr.

DeBusk as he was getting away and shoot," Wellman said. A neighbor, Billie Jo Dietrich, got the license number of a car she saw driving away from DeBusk's apartment after the shooting. That night police found the car, a 1977 Cadillac. It was registered to Reddick. When detectives talked to Reddick, he told them he knew what they wanted and would like to help them but was afraid he would be arrested, Sudler said.

Four months later Sudler talked to Reddick again. The detective asked Reddick if he knew DeBusk and Reddick said no, Sudler said. The detective told Reddick that police had found his fingerprints inside DeBusk's apartment. Reddick changed his story to say he did know DeBusk, Sudler said. The trial continues today.
