In Cycle Races Today By BOB SMITH Tribune Bowling Editor The Major League Baseball Bowling Tournament is scheduled at East Gate Lanes' on March 21 and is expected to draw some of the top names in major league baseball as participants. The tournament is a closed affair, even the spectators limited to an Invitation list because of the impossibility of controlling a large crowd at the bowling lane.

Smith However, some Tampa bowl ers will get into the tournament either as spectators or as partic ipants through a city-wide tour nament organized by the Great er Tampa Bowling Proprietors Association. Individual tournaments will be held at BPA houses over the city between March 5 through 17 and one out of every six entries will qualify for a rolloff to be held March 18. It will be a handicap singles affair for men only. Out of the rolloff, the two highest scorers representing each of the local houses will receive an invitation to the major league party and tourna ment. Jim Gibson, head of the Tampa BPA, said an effort is being made to get Dick Weber National All Star Champion, and other bowling pros to Tampa for the baseball tourna ment.

If possible, the lucky Tampans will be paired with the pro bowlers or baseball players in a pro-am tournament during the baseball tournament The Whatley team in the Tampa Masters League set a new house record at Florida Lanes with a 954 game. The team was paced by Irene Birch who rolled a tremendous 255 game. Her other games of 191 and 198 gave her a 644 scratch genes. In the high game, Mrs. had a 198, Mabel Ring a 213, Irene Ward at 192, Helen Whatley a 160 and Shirley Sutter a 191.

The Walters-Howard team rolled against Whatley and had a respectable 877 game but lost. For Walters-Howard Eunice Lopez had a 213 and Bea McRae a 210. Myrt Twyname rolled a 242 game and 573 series in the Coliseum Florida Scratch League, Judy Forrest had a 232 in the Alley Kats League and Mary punn had a league record 236 game in the Regal Bowlerettes. he also had a 554 series. Fred Williams of the All Star Mixed League tossed nine strikes in a row, after starting with a strike and a split, for a 261 game.

But right behind Resweber are Joe Leonard of San Jose, and Rober Reiman of Ke-wanne, 111. Leonard, winner of the 200-mile beach-road races at Daytona in 1957 and 1958 and runner-up to Resweber in the national standings last year, sped around the course at a 73.521 mph qualifying clip. Reiman, who is on leave from the Air Force, won the first 200-miler on the new speedway last year.

His qualifying time was 73.267 mph. Leonard and Reiman will also be astride Harley-Davidsons. The winner will get $3,000 plus lap money at the rate of $10 per lap, which gives him a chance to rake down $4,000. Southeast Tampa Smallfry Tryouts Scheduled Southeast Tampa Little League will continue its try-outs Monday for 12-year-olds at the Tidewater Field, Clair-Mcl City. Eleven -year -old boys will try out Tuesday, 10-year-olds on Wednesday and 9-year-olds on Thursday. All tryouts will start at 5:30 p.m.

Sophomore sprinter George Leach, Tampa, will give the Gators valuable points in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. The new Crown Lanes house on West Hillsborough Avenue just north of Tampa Interna tional Airport, is i up ahead of schedule and Frank Palazzola, who will manage the new lanes and Regal Lanes, ex pects to be open for business May 15. The building is colonial style and the decor of the interior will be colonial from the light fixtures to the floor. What up front will be modern, however, with the newest in Brunswick pinspotters, underground returns and ball racks. Palazzola said he expects the building to be ready for the installation of the bowling equipment by April 1 and he will have personnel at the new lanes to show visitors around. Today Brandon, a member of the Tampa Bay Baseball League, will hold practice today at 1 p.m. at the Brandon High School diamond behind the football stadium, J. G. Mays, the manager, announced. Coach Percy Beard has set March 31 as the date for the 19th annual Florida relays, which attracts more than a thousand athletes each year. In addition to Navy, the Sky Divers To Jump At Dragway Drag race fans will have chance to witness the Tampa Sky Divers in action Sunday afternoon at the Tampa Drag- way. The amateur sky divers will attempt to hit a target on the drag strip after bailing out of their plane at an altitude of 10.000 feet. Bill Wilson and Warren Kauffman of Tampa, will buzz the strip at 2:30 Sunday afternoon and then climb to 10,000 feet altitude before bailing out with smoke flares so that spectators may follow their descent.

Both men will- free fall for period of 45 seconds before attempting to open their chutes. At the point of opening their chutes, WHson and Kauffman will be approximately 2,500 feet from the ground. They will then attempt to hit target set on the drag strip. The two divers are instructors at the Amateur Sky Divers Club that meets Sunday mornings at the Zephyrhills airport. The Club is a member of the Parachute Club of America and has strict set of safety rules.

Track manager Bill Herndon has announced that trophies and prize money will be awarded top eliminators in drag events. Time trials will be held at 10:30 a.m. and eliminations will begin at 3 p.m.. immediately following the demonstration by the Sky Divers. Herndon stated that more than 100 cars are expected to be on hand to compete Sunday at the Dragway.
