(UPI) Three of the four yachts which begin final trials today for the right to represent the U.S. in the America's cup, took practice sails yesterday, as did Australia's Gretel II. Only the favorite, Intrepid, remained in harbor after having taken a final tuneup Sunday. Valiant, skippered by Bob McCullough, was out of the water Saturday and Sunday for final work on its hull and rudder and was refloated early yesterday. Heritage, the Florida 12-meter owned and skippered by Charles Morgan, has undergone extensive changes, including a new mainsail, and Morgan tested a new boom yesterday.

"Heritage is greatly improved from when he started observation trials," said In-trepid's skipper Bill Ficker. Intrepid, which has won most of the observation races against Valiant and Heritage, sailed against Heritage Sunday and seemed to have only a slight superiority. sombreros to make Joe Doc 29 mile Mel paid RESULTS FIRST RACE Five-sixteenths mile Grade (first half daily double): Dobs PPOffStr Fin Brent Cole 7 1 1-6 1-5 14.80 Gallant Titus 8 4 2 2-5 5.10 E.T.'s Run Swifty .6 2 3 3-10 3.20 Brent Cole $31.60, $18.00, Gallant Titus $4.20, E.T.'s Run Swifty $4.40.
