There are no Edith M. Cornish, and a brother, MRS. MARTHA MEYER the administration will beat the McGovern-Hatfield proposal by about 10 votes. Last year it lost, 55-39. WHILE THE OUTLOOK appeared dim for Chiles' amendment, it may attract votes because it permits the President to ignore it, if he determines the North Vietnamese government is not negotiating earnestly on release of Americans in POW camps.

Chiles said he has not discussed his amendment with the administration or the major sponsors of the Dec. 31 deadline, South Dakota Democrat George McGovern and Oregon Republican Mark Hatfield. THE FLORIDIAN wants the withdrawal deadline pushed back because Dec. 31 will be "too quickly on us." The cancellation clause in the amendment also gives President. Nixon "bargaining room" on the POW issue, Chiles explained.

The group talked with administrators and with some of the students who withdrew from the school. Spell It Out Representatives of Parents Opposed to Forced Cross-Busing were told by aides to Gov. His amendment provides a "reasonable date" said Chiles, and strengthens the President's hands because it shows congressional support for the administration's negotiations and permits Nixon to suspend the deadline right away if the Communists do not cooperate. "I'VE BEEN TOLD Dec. 31 isn't a locked date," in the view of McGovern-Hatfield supporters, Chiles said. "Perhaps this is a middle ground."
