The view was Roger Bansemer, one of Clearwater's most successful artists, gave this account of how he felt several months ago as he stood on a scaffold high above the city of Sydney, Australia, painting a mural on the outside of a restaurant. He and his wife Denise spent January in Australia, where it was summer and the weather was "unnoticeably comfortable," he said.

It was his first trip to Australia, and he fell in love with the people and the country and is already making plans for a return trip. The Bansemers made the trip at the invitation of a fellow hot-air balloon enthusiast, Australian restaurateur Roger Meadmore. "He invited me to come and paint a mural on his Sydney restaurant," Bansemer explained. He accepted the job and, gathering up some of his paintings to show to gallery owners, flew to London on the first leg of a trip that took more hours than he wanted to remember. Sydney was "big, but clean," he recalled.

"It had the cultural excitement of New York City, but there was no comparison in other ways. The people were congenial, and I didn't feel threatened." Prices there are the same as here, he said. "Food and gas is the same, and they have all the conveniences of the United States," he said. He flew around the country in an odd assortment of airplanes. He went to a restaurant in a seaplane one day and on another occasion found himself flying upside down in a biplane built in the 1940s.

It took him three days to paint the mural, and the fee "more than paid for our trip," the artist said. As for the country, Bansemer said, "it was the nicest place I've ever been, and I wouldn't hesitate to move there if it just wasn't so far away!" Clearwater visitors to Sydney can see Bansemer's paintings at Holdsworth Gallery. NOON to 5 UIMERTON ROAD mm Model 1908 Harvey Sadowski, who runs a small gallery and frame shop in Clearwater, is having a one-man show of 30 watercolors, acrylics and hand-tinted serigraphs at the Morton F. Plant Hospital gallery. The show is a sunny collage of tropical birds, children, sailboats and frolicking pandas, and includes a number of sensitive portraits.

One of Sadowski's brilliantly hued paintings of a macaw hangs in the hospital's Lykes Cancer Center, a gift after he recovered from surgery that removed part of his right lung. The colorful bird is so popular with patients going in and out of the center that they often stop and pose for a photograph with it, Sadowski learned recently. Preparing the works for the show was a "a kind of labor of love," he said. "People at the hospital have been super nice to me." The show opens today and will be up through May 24. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the sale of each work will be donated in equal portions to the hospital and the cancer center.

Prices of the works range from $30 to $300. The gallery is in the first-floor corridor connecting the main building and the Barnard addition.
