Rowdy notes Tampa Bay Rowdy Coach Gordon Jago has been telling people since late last year, and as recently as the past road trip, that this is expected to be his final coaching year. There have been inquiries by. other North American Soccer League coaches about the availability of the position. Don't be surprised to see Rowdy goalkeeper Winston DuBose back in the starting lineup Saturday night against Vancouver.

Nothing against Kevin Keelan, mind you, who has performed above average since joining the club in late April, but DuBose's return frees up a spot for another foreign player on the field, probably in the back on defense. NASL officials say they will be watching carefully and contacting airlines and clubs about the possible air traffic controllers strike scheduled for next Tuesday. Cancellation of flights would affect the Rowdies' travel plans to Atlanta for next Tuesday's game against the division-leading Chiefs. It could end up as a bus trip. "I can see the foundation being built for the future," said Best.

"We're getting a better side, a far stronger side. And it has made it easier for me." Pressure has been Best's middle name over the years. He was always expected to do it all. When he didn't, he was castigated for it When he did, well, thafs to be expected from the European Player of the Year. He couldnt win for losing.

"Now this takes the pressure off me," Best said. "I feel I can go out and if I don't do it, the job can still be done by others. I played as well last year as this one, but it was difficult because I didnt have the support around me." Best said the release of that pressure and his new lease on life may add some time to his playing career. At least he hopes so. "I feel good physically" he said, "and rye been lucky with injuries." When his career does end, there will be a waiting line for his talents as a coach.

Already, he's scheduled for a farewell tour similar, although on a lesser scale, to Pele's. He's also holding his George Best Gityukiks Soccer Camps in San Jose, and they are filled to the brim by area youngsters hoping his talents will rub off. These are days of wine and roses for George Best In the literal sense, the days of wine are over, the alcoholism that plagued the Irish international for years, culminating in his hospitalization and a self-help program last year, are behind him. But in a figurative sense, 1981 has been all roses for Best, one of the glorious names the game of soccer has produced. This season with the San Jose Earthquakes has been like his magical days of the late '60s at Manchester United in the English League.

For George Best, getting up every day is a new adventure, and he's making the most pf his second chance. He is a playerassistant coach at San Jose, the right-hand man for Jimmy Gabriel. He is also the father of a 4-month-old son, a child he dearly wanted but avoided having because of his problems. "His attitude since he came out of the hospital has changed much more in many subtle ways," Gabriel said recently. "He's more self-opinionated and loves to help with the coaching.

He still gets frustrated at times but shows it in a positive way." That change is a major one. Or it might have been a tirade of four-letter words followed by a succession of nights on the town. In truth, George Best, that impish and captivating player with the little boy running around inside him, has grown up. A year ago in Tampa, Best admitted he was moving in that direction.

"Everyone grows up sooner or later," said the 35-year-old midfielder. The four-year building plan San Jose has begun has made his transition into the adult world a bit easier. It has shown up in his six-goal, six-assist performance this year, helped by the fact that he has been surrounded by good players like Mark Lindsay, Josef Horvath, Tony Powell, Gary Etherington and Jimmy McAlister.
