Co-workers will miss public defender est humanitarians I've known," said his wife of nine years, Lois. Shearer said he's been moved most in his career by two clients: Donnie "Catman" Watts, a Lakeland man recently convicted of firstdegree murder for killing a neighboring couple; and Lula Mae King, acquitted for killing her abusive husband in self-defense. Watts' defense was that he was in a subconscious rage during or after an epileptic seizure. Police officers from his hometown of Forsythe, testified he'd had hypnotic rage reactions from seizures from the time he was 12. Watts' trial had to be postponed several times because of seizures or seizure-related illness.

"Donnie is one of the most pathetic fellows that I've represented because he's probably by far the most remorseful client," Shearer said of the 250-pound man. "He hates himself for having this problem and for having hurt anybody. He really is a gentle giant." King, Shearer said, had been through years of abuse and could have been hostile, but instead applied her energies while in jail help- Polk district schools take leap into computer age The program is under way again this year. Parent-Teacher Organizations at some schools also held fund-raisers to pay for computers in schools, he said. Twenty-six elementary schools and two middle schools have fullyequipped computer laboratories.

Six high schools offer the Computer Alternative Program, which combines school and outside employment as a way to persuade at-risk students to stay in school. Alice Ray-Overstreet, computer curriculum specialist for the school system, said the drop-out prevention program is offered to classes of 24 to 32 students at Mulberry, Bartow, Auburndale, Haines City, Kathleen and Lake Wales. The same program also is offered at the Lake Alfred Career Development Center and Gause Career Development Center in Bartow, she said. The program splits the school day in half, with morning hours spent in classes using computer instruction, primarily in English and mathematics, and afternoons spent at jobs in the community, Ray-Overstreet said. "It's what you as an individual are most comfortable with." Shearer hasn't gotten the notoriety that some other assistant public defenders have in recent years. Shearer is more concerned about helping out where he's needed rather than seeking out high-profile cases, Maslanik said. "I think that Larry is one of the most under-rated trial lawyers," Maslanik said. True defender Shearer remained an assistant public defender 13 years because he said Moorman is a supportive leader, dedicated to providing excellent representation for clients; and because he said he firmly believes in the public defender system, providing attorney representation for people who can't afford it. His friends, family and colleagues say being a public defender fits Shearer.

Computers are used at the high school level in foreign language laboratories and to supplement instruction in subjects such as chemistry and physics. Black said every public school in Polk County has some computers and most schools use them to supplement school work in kindergarten through 12th grade. Both Ann Greenwood, the computer teacher at Jesse Keen Elementary, and Mary Smither, the computer teacher at Carlton Palmore Elementary, said it is hard to measure the benefits of computer literacy at the elementary level, but both said they think computers benefit children of all ability levels, especially those in the average range. The state Department of Education (DOE) has yet to evaluate computer education, said Shirley McCandless, educational technology consultant at the DOE in Tallahassee.

"We are in the process of a formal evaluation in conjunction with the state Department of Education in California," McCandless said. "We'd like to be able to say students show a 95 percent improvement, but we can't say that yet. Computer education is too new. "She was just a neat person," he said.

"She'd been through so much and she was very unselfish." Sad goodbye Shearer said he has mixed feelings about leaving; he is looking forward to a change but is sad about going. "It was hard to tell Marion and my secretary and my friends," Shearer said. He was with the Public Defender's Office longer than any other attorney except Paul Helms, who joined the office three months before Shearer did. Jerry Jones, Shearer's secretary for eight years and close friend, talked somberly recently about Shearer's departure from the office.
