The Tampa Tribune, Thursday, June 25, 1992 Curb-side program to be replaced in Wildwood By STEVE ORLANDO Tribune Staff Writer WILDWOOD Fanciful, brightly colored recycling bins should be in place within two to three weeks, replacing Wildwood's 4-year-old, curb-side recycling program that has become too expensive to continue. The fiberglass bins, 17 in all, will have a smiling face on the front, a friendly way to attract those who might otherwise shun recycling, said Wildwood City Manager Jim Stevens. City commissioners Monday tentatively agreed to four locations around the city for the bins: Central Street near the city public works de- GOVERNMENT CALENDAR Marion TODAY Downtown Development Commission, City Hall 8 a.m. Alachua TODAY Alachua County District Library Governing Board, Library Headquarters 9:30 a.m. County Commissioner Kate Barnes and city Commissioner Paula Delaney, Re: County Administration Building 1:30 p.m.

Each bin will be color-coded for the material to be placed in it: yellow for aluminum, silver for tin, white for clear glass and blue for newspapers. A brown, 330-gallon container will accept used motor oil and likely will be placed near the public works building, said Public Works Director Gene Kornegay. Plastics, such as milk jugs and 2-liter soda bottles, currently collected at the curb, no longer will be accepted in a bin, Stevens said. That's because they, like most other recyclable items, no longer fetch the prices they once did.

Also, said Stevens, many people fail to crush the jugs and bottles before depositing them, which means fewer can be collected before the bin fills up. The bins will cost nearly $11,000 and will be paid for through the county's annual grant from the state Department of Environmental Regulation. The voluntary curb-side program currently is offered to about 1,000 households, of which about 90 percent participate at any given time, Stevens said. However, the city lately has found that the program's benefits are outweighed by its costs, mostly because of the glutted market for recyclable items. "It still is successful in separating what would be refuse for the landfill.

It's just not paying for itself," Stevens said. While the bins still will encourage recycling, Stevens said, they may lead to a drop in participation. Wildwood's recycling program is not connected to the recycling and composting program at the Sumter County landfill near Sumterville. That program was largely responsible for helping the county recycle 43 percent of its waste, making it the state's top recycler. State closes forest entrances to control illegal dumping By DEAN SOLOV Tribune Staff Writer INVERNESS The state Division of Forestry and the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission are closing about 15 entrances to the Withlacoochee State Forest in Citrus County to reduce illegal dumping and other violations, a state official said.

State officials have been erecting marked concrete posts at the entrances stating entry is prohibited there, said Chuck Schneider, the forestry division's area supervisor. About 20 entrances will remain open, he said. The purpose of closing the entrances is to give state said. Though entrances will be closed, all roads the forest will remain open, he said. Vehicles can easily go around the posts to enter, anyone who does can be cited if caught, Schneider State wildlife officials will issue warnings through November, when they'll begin handing out Schneider said.

Schneider said it's important that people are of the posts so they don't harm themselves or vehicles by crashing into them. The state has closed forest entrances in the past, never so many at once, Schneider said. Maps showing open and closed entrances are officials more control over the forest to prevent viola- able through the forestry division and game commistions such as illegal hunting and dumping, Schneider sion, Schneider said.
